Elon Musk Cuts Grok Bot Usage Limits Citing Unsustainably High Costs
Author : Ravit Jain
Some users of Grok Bot encountered an unsettling surprise over the Halloween weekend: their weekly usage allowances were showing as fully exhausted, despite having made little to no use of the AI service from SpaceX overnight. Reports surfaced on X from multiple users describing sudden jumps in their recorded usage, with some accounts leaping from around 50% to a full 100% without any apparent activity to account for the difference.
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk stepped in on Sunday to clarify that what users experienced was not a technical error. Responding to a question posted by a user on the platform, Musk stated plainly that the decision to cut back usage limits was a deliberate one driven by financial pressures. He did not address the matter through his main feed, though he has continued to promote Grok Bot in other posts, including content highlighting how the AI can assist users in purchasing gifts for family members.

Financial Context Behind the Cutback
Grok Bot has been presented as one of the standout achievements for SpaceX since the company went public. In a filing released last month, SpaceX disclosed that artificial intelligence now accounts for 52% of its total company income - a significant milestone that underscores just how central AI has become to its business model. The company's rebranded "Super Intelligence" division posted a profit of $431 million, which is a notable achievement in an industry where profitability among AI ventures remains uncommon.
That profit figure would have been considerably higher, however, had it not been for $1.2 billion in one-time costs tied to the company's acquisition of Cursor. Those charges weighed heavily on the overall financial picture despite the underlying business performing well. Musk himself has spoken enthusiastically about Grok Bot's trajectory, recently describing it as having what he called the fastest growth of any product he has witnessed in his career.
Subscriber Impact Remains Unclear
Despite confirming that the reduced limits were a deliberate response to unsustainable service costs, Musk has not yet provided any specific details about how subscribers can expect their usage caps to be structured going forward. Users are currently left without a clear picture of what their ongoing allowances will look like or whether any adjustments to pricing or tier structures are being considered to offset the cost pressures that prompted the cutback.
The episode highlights a recurring challenge in the AI industry: the significant and often unpredictable infrastructure costs involved in running large-scale AI services at consumer scale. Even for a company generating hundreds of millions in profit from its AI division, the economics of serving high volumes of user requests can quickly become difficult to sustain without corresponding revenue growth or usage restrictions.
