Meta Snaps Up AI Coding Startup Conductor in Latest Tech Acquisition
Author : Ravit Jain
Meta has moved to acquire Conductor, an AI-powered coding startup that enables users to launch software projects by deploying multiple autonomous agents across parallel workspaces simultaneously.
The deal was first reported by Axios before Conductor itself confirmed the news through a post on its official blog, making the acquisition public knowledge on Wednesday.
"I have big news: Conductor is joining Meta," wrote Charlie Holtz, the startup's founder and chief executive officer, in the announcement. Holtz hinted at ambitious plans ahead, noting that the company would have "something new" available for customers "by early next year" and describing the upcoming developments as "big, crazy plans for the next interface."
In a separate post on X, Holtz expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with key figures at Meta, specifically naming Alexandr Wang, the company's chief AI officer, and Nat Friedman, who heads product at Meta's Superintelligence Labs. "They've been on an absolute tear, and I'm convinced MSL has the highest talent density of all the labs," Holtz wrote, signaling confidence in the direction the combined team would take.
Meta acknowledged the acquisition when contacted for comment but declined to offer any further details or disclose the financial terms of the deal.
About Conductor and Its Technology
Conductor was founded in 2024 and only brought its flagship product to market last summer, making this acquisition a remarkably swift exit for a startup still in its early stages. The company's platform centers on what it calls agentic teams - groups of AI agents that can be deployed across cloud environments, local machines, or a user's mobile device. These agents are designed to assist software engineers by working on distinct, compartmentalized sections of a codebase in a coordinated and parallel fashion.
Notably, the AI agents that power Conductor's platform are not developed internally. Instead, the company draws on models from established AI laboratories, including Anthropic and OpenAI, integrating third-party capabilities into its workflow tooling.
Service Continuity and Shutdown Timeline
Holtz confirmed that Conductor's core features will continue to function as normal for users until early next year. However, there is one notable exception: the company's cloud service is set to shut down on November 20. Following that date, Conductor will begin the process of permanently deleting user data stored in the cloud. Users relying on that service have been advised to make alternative arrangements ahead of the deadline.
Meta's Broader Push Into AI
The acquisition of Conductor fits into a broader pattern of aggressive expansion by Meta in the artificial intelligence space. The social media and technology giant had previously been viewed as trailing behind competitors in AI product development, but the company has spent recent months working to close that gap.
In August, Meta launched Muse Code, its own dedicated AI coding agent, entering a competitive market that has seen rapid growth and significant investment from multiple technology companies. The company's Muse agents platform has also demonstrated strong user traction since its introduction, with Meta recently disclosing that the service has surpassed 10 million users - a milestone that underscores the growing appetite for AI-assisted tools among developers and general users alike.
Beyond organic product development, Meta has pursued a series of AI-related acquisitions over the past year as part of its strategy to build out capabilities and attract top talent. Among those deals was the purchase of Moltbook, a viral agent platform that attracted widespread attention when it first emerged. The addition of Conductor represents the latest move in what appears to be a sustained effort by Meta to position itself as a leading force in the AI tools and infrastructure landscape.
