Lightspeed Venture Partners is doubling down on artificial intelligence in India, moving to raise a $250 million early-stage fund dedicated to backing AI-driven startups across the region. The Silicon Valley-based firm views AI as the defining force behind the next generation of high-growth companies in one of the world's most populous and fastest-growing technology markets.

Lightspeed already holds a significant position in the global AI landscape, having invested in major players such as Anthropic, xAI, and Databricks. Its India-specific AI bets include Sarvam AI, widely regarded as one of the country's foremost large language model developers. Sarvam AI has also been selected by the Indian government as a partner in building sovereign AI infrastructure for the country.

The new vehicle, formally named Lightspeed India Partners V, is being sized at half the capital of its predecessor - a $500 million fund raised in 2022. Despite the smaller target, the fundraise is already well advanced. According to an investor letter sent on Thursday, commitments covering roughly 80% of the $250 million goal have already been secured.

The fund was disclosed publicly in a U.S. regulatory filing in late April, though that filing did not specify how much Lightspeed intended to raise. Reports in Indian media had previously suggested the firm was targeting a figure closer to $300 million to $350 million. The investor letter, however, places the target firmly at $250 million. A spokesperson for Lightspeed declined to provide comment on the matter.

Timeline and Investment Plans

According to the investor letter, Lightspeed intends to begin deploying capital from the new fund within two months. The fund has been structured around an investment period of approximately two and a half years. In the interim, the firm will continue to make its remaining investments from the existing fund before transitioning fully to the new vehicle.

One notable operational change accompanying this new fund is a shift in how Lightspeed manages its India fundraising cycles. For the first time, the India funds will be synchronized with the firm's global fundraising schedule. Lightspeed established its India presence nearly two decades ago, and this alignment brings the regional operation into closer coordination with the rest of its global platform.

The move mirrors a similar decision made by rival firm Accel, which in August raised a $550 million India fund as part of a broader, coordinated $3.5 billion fundraising effort that simultaneously closed new U.S., Europe, and global growth vehicles - the first time Accel had raised all four funds at the same time.

Why a Smaller Fund

The reduced fund size is deliberate and reflects the current pace at which Lightspeed is deploying capital in the region. The investor letter explains that the $250 million size is calibrated to match the firm's investment cadence and the fund's shorter deployment window. Lightspeed communicated to investors that a leaner fund allows the team to concentrate on the quality of individual deals rather than feeling pressure to deploy a larger pool of capital. It also means the firm can return to investors sooner with its next fundraise.

Beyond the structural changes, the new fund signals a meaningful strategic pivot. Lightspeed has framed this vehicle explicitly around artificial intelligence, marking a sharper thematic focus than its previous India funds, which invested broadly across sectors. The investment thesis laid out in the letter takes an expansive view of AI's potential, suggesting that the technology could ultimately generate more economic value in India than the internet did. The fund will look at AI-focused companies across both India and Southeast Asia.

India's AI Opportunity

India has not yet produced a globally competitive frontier AI model developer, and the country has attracted considerably less AI investment than either the United States or China. Nevertheless, the investment community is increasingly optimistic about India's prospects at the application layer of AI - the segment focused on building products and services on top of foundational models rather than developing the models themselves. That optimism is grounded in India's large and technically skilled software engineering workforce, as well as its long-established role as a global hub for software development and technology services.

Sarvam AI, one of Lightspeed's existing India investments, is among the handful of Indian companies attempting to build indigenous large language models, and its selection by the Indian government to support the development of sovereign AI models underscores the strategic importance the country places on developing homegrown AI capabilities.

Lightspeed's Broader Global Platform

The $250 million India fund represents a small slice of the capital Lightspeed manages globally. The firm oversees more than $65 billion in assets across its entire platform. In December of last year, Lightspeed completed what was the largest fundraising effort in its history, bringing in $9 billion across multiple new funds. That total included a $980 million early-stage venture fund aimed at global investments.

Lightspeed's dedicated India and Southeast Asia funds are also just one channel through which the firm has put money to work in the region. Those regional funds have collectively deployed around $900 million. In addition, Lightspeed's global funds have invested a further $1.6 billion to support companies originating from the regional portfolio, according to figures cited in the investor letter. Taken together, the firm's total capital deployed in India and Southeast Asia is substantially larger than what its regional funds alone would suggest.

A Broad India Portfolio

While the new fund marks a sharper AI-centric thesis, Lightspeed's existing India portfolio reflects a much broader range of sectors. The firm has historically invested across consumer internet, quick commerce, enterprise software, and household services in the country. Its India bets include fast-delivery startup Zepto, audio content platform Pocket FM, home services startup Snabbit, rooftop solar company SolarSquare, and a variety of enterprise software businesses.

The new fund will be managed by the same team that has led Lightspeed's previous four India funds, according to the investor letter. The continuity in leadership suggests the firm sees its existing India investment team as well-positioned to execute on the new AI-focused mandate, even as the strategy itself takes a more concentrated thematic direction than in prior cycles.

With 80% of commitments already in place and a deployment timeline expected to begin within weeks, Lightspeed appears to be moving quickly to establish its position in what it views as a pivotal moment for AI adoption and company formation in the Indian market.
