For most of the past decade, Siri sat in the background of the iPhone experience - occasionally useful for setting a timer or triggering an alarm, but rarely trusted with anything more demanding. That dynamic has shifted considerably with the arrival of iOS 27, which delivers a substantially rebuilt version of Apple's voice assistant alongside a range of practical improvements that together make for one of the more meaningful iPhone software updates in recent memory.

Having tested iOS 27 across two devices - one running the developer beta and another on the public beta - the upgraded Siri stands out as the release's defining feature. What makes that notable is not just the technical improvement, but the behavioral shift it encourages. After years of users quietly abandoning Siri in favor of third-party AI tools, Apple appears to have built something capable of winning them back.

A Rebuilt Siri Powered by Gemini

Apple first teased a more capable, context-aware Siri when it introduced Apple Intelligence over two years ago. That vision was repeatedly delayed, and the version that eventually shipped - relying on extended knowledge graphs and a loosely integrated ChatGPT connection - fell short of expectations. With iOS 27, Apple has rebuilt Siri on top of Google's Gemini models, and the result is a noticeably smarter assistant that handles complex, multi-step requests with far greater reliability.

In practical testing, Siri was asked about sports topics including World Cup match results, team lineups, and live scores. While some inconsistencies appeared in earlier developer builds, accuracy improved significantly in later versions. More impressively, Siri can now handle layered instructions - for example, being asked to research hidden or lesser-known features in iOS 27 and compile them into a note, which it executed competently.

Siri can also draft and send messages on a user's behalf. Because it can access context from files, emails, and message threads, it is possible to ask the assistant to locate a specific conversation - such as one involving a delivery - and compose a reply or initiate a return request based on that context. That kind of cross-app awareness represents a meaningful leap beyond what the assistant could do previously.

On-Screen Context and Camera Integration

One of the more practical additions is Siri's ability to interpret what is currently displayed on the screen. During testing, the assistant was asked to identify the oldest player shown in a World Cup lineup on screen, read out text from a webpage when reading was inconvenient, and look up funding history and competitors for a startup whose website was open at the time. Each of these worked without requiring the user to copy text or switch applications.

A particularly useful workflow emerged while browsing coffee-related communities online. Siri was asked to save mentions of specific roasters and beans directly to a designated note. There were occasional hiccups in getting the assistant to identify the correct note by name, but simplifying the note's title resolved most of those issues.

The Camera app now supports Siri queries about objects visible in the viewfinder. At a restaurant, Siri was asked to identify a drink being held in frame. Based on the color, it initially identified it as green juice - a reasonable visual guess. When given the additional context that the setting was an Indian restaurant, it correctly narrowed the identification to Jaljeera or Aam Panna. Siri was also asked to photograph a restaurant's exterior sign and suggest standout menu items based on that information.

The same camera-based functionality extends to other scenarios. Pointing the camera at a bag of coffee beans and asking Siri for brewing recommendations, for instance, is now a supported interaction.

Siri Gets Its Own Dedicated App

iOS 27 introduces a standalone Siri application that stores previous conversations, allowing users to revisit past interactions rather than starting from scratch each time. Within the Settings menu, users can also adjust Siri's voice and tune its expressiveness to their preference.

Apple has also positioned the new Siri to work alongside third-party applications. As developers update their apps following the operating system's wider rollout, the quality of handoffs between Siri and those apps will be an important area to watch.

Apple Intelligence Features Across the OS

Beyond Siri itself, Apple Intelligence underpins several other new capabilities scattered throughout iOS 27.

Apple has introduced what amounts to a natural language shortcut builder within the Shortcuts app. Rather than manually constructing automation workflows, users can describe what they want in plain language. A request like "show me today's to-do items every morning at 8 a.m." or "convert photo to JPEG" is enough to generate a working shortcut. From there, additional steps can be layered on - for example, converting selected photos to JPEG and sharing them via AirDrop. This approach lowers the barrier significantly for users who previously found Shortcuts too technical to explore.

As a practical example, it is straightforward to build a shortcut that uses Shazam to identify a song playing nearby and automatically saves both the track name and the current location to a note - useful for anyone who frequently hears music they want to remember while out.

Safari gains a new custom alert feature that allows users to monitor specific pages for changes. This could be used to track price adjustments on a product listing, updates to a blog, or revisions to a privacy policy - without needing a third-party service to do so.

The Photos app has received two new editing tools called "reframe" and "extend." Results from these tools are inconsistent - they work well in some cases and produce awkward results in others - but the improvements to the existing object eraser tool are more reliable. The eraser now removes unwanted elements from images with fewer visual artifacts than in previous versions.

Apple Intelligence also introduces smart suggestions that surface when incoming messages contain event details or location information. The system prompts users to add that information directly to Calendar or Notes. Additionally, the Passwords app can now automatically update a saved password by logging into the relevant website and completing the change process on the user's behalf.

Quality-of-Life Improvements Worth Noting

Among the smaller but highly practical additions in iOS 27 is a revamped clipboard system. Users can now copy almost any type of content - links, images, video clips, or text - from one app and paste it into another with greater ease. When an item has been copied, a shortcut button appears on the keyboard identifying the source, such as "paste from Safari," making the action immediate and intuitive. It is a modest change in concept but one that meaningfully improves day-to-day use for anyone who frequently moves content between applications.

The visual design system introduced with Liquid Glass, which drew criticism from some users for its transparency levels, now includes granular controls. Rather than choosing from a fixed set of presets, users can dial in precisely how transparent or opaque they want the interface elements to appear.

iOS 27 also introduces intelligent network switching. When a Wi-Fi connection becomes unstable or drops, the device automatically transitions to mobile data without user intervention. The handoff is seamless and particularly useful during activities where losing connectivity would be disruptive.

Child safety tools have received considerable attention in this update. A new setup flow recommends age-appropriate apps during device configuration. Parents and guardians can set screen time schedules, usage limits, and allowances that vary by day of the week. Notifications alert guardians when a child attempts to access a new website, and approval can be granted or denied remotely. The system also displays warnings when children encounter nudity within Messages, FaceTime, or other supported applications.

Availability and Compatibility

iOS 27 does not carry an overwhelming number of headline features beyond the Siri overhaul, but the cumulative effect of its improvements makes it a genuinely useful update. The combination of a smarter assistant, practical automation tools, and quality-of-life refinements means that users are likely to find themselves reaching for built-in iPhone features more often, rather than turning to standalone AI apps for basic queries.

The update is available for iPhone 11 and later, as well as the iPhone SE (second generation) and later. Users can install it by navigating to Settings, then General, then Software Update on their device.
